Fans would take sides on who they agree with on a concept that has changed from the media. “Fandom today is all about popular culture, mass media, and the ability to connect with like-minded others” (Kristin M 2013) which means fans are a community of a group of people in a specific interest of media. In other words “fans cannot dismiss their interest by finding ways to salvage their interests.” meaning they want to think their content is real which then means the result of this makes “fans become active participants making them less of an audience” which creates a new audience for those who engage in the fandom based on who agrees with the opinion. In doing so, a fan would change the story-line with a different twist especially engaging with characters. This is because “fans are not just fascinated but also frustrated because narration often fails to satisfy the fans” so fans make their own narration on what they wanted to have happen which did not in the actual media content. Media content is made into a fan made version which is shared. This means that the media have no control over what the audience does to their own work. An early definition by Henry Jenkins says “It proposes a conception of fans as readers and popular text where spectators who transform the experience of watching television into social identity by borrowing images which go unvoiced by the dominant media”. Textual poaching has many different definitions. For example, the dialogue has changed in order for the characters to react to the scenario as it has changed from the original game. The story-line has also changed to fit the zombie Apocalypse theme. The game follows along the same story as the anime, rather than the original story the Pokemon games have.Īnother example would be Pokemon Snakewood where the Pokemon characters have changed into zombies. Here you can see that in fact this screen is based on the actual anime series, the Squirtle Squad which is one of the memorable scenes in the anime from the first region. First, I will briefly discuss what Pokemon is and the Pokemon games. By looking at different definitions of the concept textual poaching, they will be compared with examples of how Pokemon game hacks is true or false in each definition based on many theories that will be explored throughout the essay.
